My Travel Confession: I’m Terrified of Snowboarding

Posted by

My boyfriend snowboarding in Val-d'Isère - he tells me it's easy....

There we go, I’ve admitted it. I’ve been banging on about how excited I am to go snowboarding in Andorra next month, but if truth be told – I’m terrified.

I’m terrified of hurting myself, of falling and breaking my bones, banging my head and bruising my body from head to toe.

I hate being cold. I have no balance. And I’m a total wimp.

So why the hell am I going snowboarding?

Well, here’s the weird thing. I actually like being scared.

I like that feeling when your body is filled with so much adrenaline there’s a definite possibility it will explode out of your head like a colourful firework. I like being challenged and pushing myself to the limit. But most of all, I like it when I accomplish things that I never thought were possible.

I’m still not sure if I’ll ever be able to gracefully zoom down a mountain while zig-zagging between skiers and coming to a stylish halt at the bottom. I don’t even know if I have what it takes to get on the lift, but I do know one thing…I’m going to give it everything I’ve got.

I’ve been skiing before and every single day I was terrified. Everyday my stomach would be churning through nerves and my legs shaking through exhaustion. Every single day I’d reluctantly get on my skis but I’d give it everything I’d got.

OK, I did have the occasional hissy fit, temper tantrum or ‘snow strop’ when I just couldn’t quite get it, but it was the best feeling in the world when I did get it.

This will be me in a couple of weeks...in my dreams!

So here’s to conquering your fears and doing what scares you the most. Wish me luck as I attempt to get fit for the trip and work on finding my balance before I go.

Is there anything that really scares you but you still want to do it anyway?

  • It’s all about the adrenaline rush! Have fun–you’re going to love it!

  • Oh you lucky girl, you’re going snowboarding! The same happens to me – I have no balance, don’t really like the cold and am afraid of falling… and still, I decided to take the chance this weekend I’m in Geneva for work, to take a crash course on skiing! Have you been to the Snozone outside London? I might be going there the last weekend of January to try it out… should be good to learn the basics!

    • Hope you have fun this weekend, let me know how you get on! I’ve been considering some lessons at a Snowdome too, the only thing is that it’s really expensive but probs worth it to be able to get on my feet and learn the basics beforehand.

  • Good luck Monica! You’ll do great I’m sure, you have the right attitude! Just be persistent, it’s unfortunately a bit trickier than skiing I think, but then again I might biased as I learned to ski much earlier than to snowboard ;)

Can’t wait to hit the alps myself in March!

  • I’m totally the same! I would be so scared of snowboarding but I’d love to go – have an AMAZING time, I’m so jelous. I can’t wait to hear all about it! xxxxx

  • Ah Monica you will love it!

Or actually maybe you won’t because as Jarmo says you do have to persevere. But the apres-ski, mountains and joy of being outside should make up for it. My best advice is to not take it too seriously and to bend your knees – always!

if you do find it tough just remind yourself that “if Bird can do it, I definitely can and will” because I didn’t find it easy at all but 8 years on I am hooked and already counting down to my next time on the snow…

    Bird x
