On Thursday (September 12th) at 7.30pm GMT I’ll be joining @JayneyTravels as a co-host for her Twitter chat #TravelBookChat. This week’s theme is oceans and islands. So get the date in your diary and read on to find out more about the chat.
Now I’m well aware that I may have baffled a few of you right there and then. Co-host? Twitter chat? #TravelBookChat? What the hell am I talking about? I had this reaction in the pub on Friday evening as my non-blogger friends looked at me like I was speaking a different language. They know I’m a bit of a geek but sometimes I shock them with the depths of my geekiness. But it’s cool to be a geek these days, right…?
I’ll start with the basics before I tell you a little more about this week’s #TravelBookChat
What is a Twitter chat?
A Twitter chat is an organized chat on Twitter where a bunch of like-minded people get together for about 45 minutes to chat about a specific topic. You use a hashtag, in this case #TravelBookChat, so everyone can follow the conversation without being interrupted by tweets from other people and so you can see the tweets of people you don’t follow.
What’s a co-host?
There will be questions during the Twitter chat, usually about 10 minutes apart, so we stay on topic. Jayne and I will be sending the questions out at specific times and will be around to answer questions and keep the conversation moving.
Tips for a Twitter chat
If you really want to get involved in a Twitter chat then it’s best to use a platform like Hootsuite or Tweetdeck. My personal favourite is Tweetdeck. You can set up a search stream for the hashtag and easily follow along without getting lost. Tweetdeck is free and really easy to use.
So what’s this #TravelBookChat all about?
Every couple of weeks Jayne organizes a chat on Twitter about travel books. There will be a specific them such as adventure travel or beach reads and this week’s theme is oceans and islands.
I know I’m not alone in my daydreams to travel to far away and exotic islands so I have a feeling this will be a good one! It gives us a chance to chat about the books we love and also find some great new books to add to the reading list.
I hope you can join us! The more people we have involved the better so spread the word with the Twitter button here -> Tweet
