Gorgeous glamping in Swansea Bay in a Shepherd Hut

 

I love glamping. You get to enjoy the great outdoors and feel closer to nature but without the nasty side of camping. You know, the bit with cold, leaky tents and deflated airbeds.

I love bell tents and teepees, pods and treehouses and now I have a new type of glamping to add to my list, it’s glamping in a shepherd hut!

Shepherd huts are small and simple huts but with everything you need for a comfortable stay. You won’t find so many shepherds or sheep around them these days, especially the ones that have had a luxury makeover.

I travelled down to beautiful Swansea Bay to stay in a Grand Shepherd Hut for a long weekend. I was travelling with Sam and our baby boy, George, and it turned out to be a perfect way to glamp with a baby.

We were staying with Scamper Holidays on Pitton Cross Campsite in Rhossili. The site is really close to Rhossili Bay Beach, voted as one of the top three beaches in the UK for the third year by TripAdvisor users. When it comes to location, it doesn’t get much better than this.

 

Our shepherd hut had a small kitchen, cosy bunk beds, a double bed, a TV, a heater and a gas BBQ. It was surrounded by a spacious veranda with outside seating and the most incredible views out to sea. Our veranda even had a welly stand and potted herbs!

The kitchen had a fridge, an oven, a hob and a kettle and all the basic utensils you’d need for simple meals, breakfasts and packed lunches.

The bunk beds are built in and there’s a gap you crawl through to get in. We were assured they’re the normal length of a bed so a fully grown man would be fine in there. The bottom bunk also turned out to be a perfect cot for a tiny baby and George slept better in there than he’d ever slept before. I think it was a mixture of sea air and a dark and cozy little nook. The cot/bunk was great because it meant we saved precious floor space because we didn’t need a travel cot.

There’s also a fold-down bed above the double bed so you could fit five people in the Grand Shepherd Hut.

The Grand Shepherd Huts sleep five people. I’m not going to lie, if you had five adults in here it would be cozy. Very cozy! But for two adults and a baby it was perfect.

The shepherd huts don’t have bathrooms so you need to use the communal bathrooms for the campsite. As it turns out, this wasn’t a problem at all because the campsite bathrooms were really nice. They were warm, sparkly and clean and the showers were really hot. The disabled bathroom also doubles up as a baby bathroom. It has a huge sink with a shower over it and it’s the perfect size for a tiny person. George loved it.
