If you’re flying with Ryanair, everyone gets a 40x20x25cm item of luggage you can take on board at no extra fee.
It doesn’t matter what luggage you’ve paid for (if any!) Every passenger gets a Ryanair personal item size bag which is 40cm x 20cm x 25cm.
This bag needs to fit under the seat in front of you and shouldn’t really go in the overhead lockers (unless the plane is really quiet and there’s plenty of space!)
Whether you’re hoping to squeeze everything you need for your whole trip into your personal item size bag (which is definitely possible for short breaks!) or you’re just using it for the few bits and bobs you’ll want to access during your flight, here are some great 40x20x25 bags suitable for the Ryanair ‘free’ personal bag.

The Travel Hack Backpack – Stylish design
- A fashionable and space-saving womens Travel Backpack cabin size which fits under the seat. It can hold laptops up to 13", serving as a convenient option for weekend trips too.
- Features an easy access top pocket for purses, sun glasses, phones and travel documents.
- Fits the Ryanair 40x20x25cm' free' underseat hand luggage rules. Flies for free on all other known airlines. Lightweight design weighs just 0.6kg.
The original and the best in my personal opinion! The Travel Hack Backpack is perfectly sized for the Ryanair 40x20x25 bag. It’s surprisingly roomy with handy pockets to organise your belongings and ensure you can find everything you need during stressful airport encounters.
It’s also a great bag to use once you reach your destination and need a ‘day bag’ for busy days out and about.
It has:
- A spacious main compartment
- Internal mesh pockets to separate and organise belongings
- Two water bottle holders
- A slim front pocket that is perfect for your passport and documents
- A padded laptop pocket at the back (can double up as an anti theft pocket when you arrive)
- A top pocket for smaller items like your phone and keys
- Ideal for use as a day bag when you arrive
Cabin Max Narvik 20L or the Cabin Max Metz Hybrid 20L – Can be wheeled

If you prefer to roll your Ryanair personal sized item then I highly recommend either the Cabin Max Narvik 20L or the Cabin Max Metz Hybrid 20L. These tiny suitcases have lots of handy pockets so you can keep everything organised and easily access your necessities during the flight.
It might seem unnecessary to have wheels for such a small bag but I often find that even a small personal item can get heavy, especially when I’ve got my laptop and travel toiletries in there. There’s a lot of standing around at the airport and potentially lots of walking too, so if you want to save your back, this is the bag for you!
It’s worth noting that the pully handle on these suitcases is pretty short due to the small size of the bag. If you’re tall then it might not be for you. My kids really like these cases but I find them a bit irritating because the bag clips your heels (I’m 5’4).

Cabin Max Metz 20L – Simple but brilliant

The Cabin Max Metz 20L ticks every box for a Ryanair underseat bag. It’s a gorgeous yet simple design and comes in loads of colours. It has one main compartment and then a pocket at the front to organise all your documents and the little things you’ll need to access before the flight. It’s a brilliant, simple design and an affordable price too.

Cabin Max Equator – Great for organising

The Cabin Max Equator is a little different because it opens out and has two sides – a little like a suitcase. If you like to keep your bag organised then this is a great option. I also love the exterior pockets so you can easily access everything during the flight.
My son uses this for his hand luggage and he likes to put his food on one side and his games on the other.

Budget holdall

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly bag then a cheap holdall will do the job. It’s definitely no-frills but it’s perfectly sized and will help keep the cost of your holiday as low as possible
20L Backpack

Another great backpack that comes in a variety of colours and will slip nicely under the Ryanair seat in front of you. This is a practical, sturdy and well-priced backpack with a nice variety of features that will make travelling a little easier.
It has:
- A 14” laptop pocket
- A dry bag section for your toiletries
- Multiple pockets and compartments
- An anti-theft back pocket
- Water repellent material
Adjustable Tote

I love this adjustable tote bag as it can be the perfect size for the Ryanair personal item size bit it can be expanded so it’s slightly bigger for the easyJet personal item size!
It’s ideal if you regularly fly with different airlines and especially good if you’re flying out with one airline and back with another.
It comes in black and some gorgeous pastel colours and the water-repellent material is hard-wearing and looks great. There’s also an internal wet pocket which is great for toiletries.

I have bought The Travel Hack Backpack and looks like I could manage a week away with this with careful packing, plenty of pockets etc. I just wondered if there is any plans to maybe make this bag with 2 wheels, as would be great advantage to me having back problems.
I know there is one that is slightly bigger but I need for Ryanair to use as “free” bag.
?? this might be a consideration.
Looking forward to using this anyway.
Thank you.
