October is one of my favourite months for a holiday in Europe. The intense heat and enormous summer crowds have usually disappeared, but there are still plenty of places where you can sit beside a pool, eat lunch in the sunshine and come home with a tan.
You do need to choose your destination carefully. Northern Europe is firmly into autumn by October, while parts of southern Europe are still enjoying daytime temperatures in the mid-20s.
If you want the most reliable heat, I would look at Cyprus or the Canary Islands first. If you are happy with warm sightseeing weather, quieter beaches and the possibility of an occasional shower, you have far more choice.

Cyprus and the Canary Islands are generally the hottest and most reliable European holiday destinations in October. Average daytime temperatures are often around 26°C to 28°C, although no destination can guarantee uninterrupted sunshine.

These are typical averages rather than a forecast. Early October is usually warmer and more settled than the end of the month, and evenings can feel considerably cooler than the daytime temperature suggests.
1. Cyprus
Typical October high: 27°C
If your main priority is heat, Cyprus would be one of my first choices. October often still feels like summer, particularly around Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca and Ayia Napa.
The sea has been warming all summer, so it is usually comfortable for swimming. This makes Cyprus a particularly good option if you want a traditional beach holiday without flying beyond Europe.
Paphos is my pick for couples, families and anyone who likes to combine lazy pool days with a bit of sightseeing. You can visit the archaeological park, see the Tombs of the Kings and head into the Troodos Mountains when you want a change from the coast.
Ayia Napa and nearby Protaras have some of the island’s loveliest beaches. The atmosphere is much quieter than it is in July and August, although some seasonal bars and attractions begin to close as the month progresses.
Choose Cyprus if: You want the best chance of a genuinely hot beach holiday.
2. Tenerife, Canary Islands

Tenerife is probably the easiest answer to the question, “Where is hot in Europe in October?” It has plenty of direct flights from the UK, an enormous choice of hotels, loads of things to do in Tenerife and a climate that stays warm long after summer has ended at home.
For the sunniest weather, stay in the south around Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos or Playa de las Américas. Northern Tenerife is greener and more atmospheric, but it is also more likely to be cloudy.
There is much more to Tenerife than resort hotels. Hire a car and visit Teide National Park, the mountain village of Masca and the historic streets of La Laguna. You could also take a whale-watching boat trip or spend a day at Siam Park. We like to stay in a hotel near Siam Park and go a couple of times during our stay because the kids love it!
The official Canary Islands tourism website reports an average October temperature of around 26°C and approximately ten hours of daylight, which explains why the islands are such a dependable autumn option.
Choose Tenerife if: You want a straightforward fly-and-flop holiday with lots of activities nearby.
3. Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Lanzarote has the same reliable autumn warmth as Tenerife, but it has a completely different personality. Personally, I prefer Lanzarote and it’s a little more laid back and the beaches are much nicer. There are lots of things to do in Lanzarote and the black volcanic landscapes, whitewashed villages and distinctive César Manrique architecture make it feel far more interesting than a standard resort island.
Playa Blanca is a good base for families and couples who want calm beaches and plenty of restaurants. Puerto del Carmen is livelier, while Costa Teguise is popular with water sports fans.
I would hire a car in Lanzarote for at least a day and drive through Timanfaya National Park, Papagayo beach, visit the green lagoon at El Golfo and stop at a vineyard in La Geria. October is a brilliant time for exploring because it is warm without the fierce midsummer heat.
Lanzarote can be breezy, so it is worth choosing accommodation with a sheltered pool area if you plan to spend most of the holiday sunbathing.
Choose Lanzarote if: You want sunshine, striking scenery and easy road trips.
4. Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Gran Canaria is another dependable choice, especially if you stay in the warmer and drier south. Maspalomas, Meloneras and Puerto Rico are all well set up for an uncomplicated autumn sunshine break.
Maspalomas is famous for its vast sand dunes, while neighbouring Meloneras has a smarter promenade lined with hotels and restaurants. Puerto de Mogán is one of the prettiest places on the island and makes a lovely day trip or quieter base.
It is worth venturing inland too. Gran Canaria has mountain villages, pine forests and dramatic viewpoints that feel a world away from the coastal resorts.
Las Palmas is a great alternative if you prefer a city break. You get the restaurants and culture of a Spanish city alongside the enormous urban beach at Las Canteras.
Choose Gran Canaria if: You want a resort holiday with the option of beaches, nightlife, hiking and city culture.
5. Malta
Typical October high: 25°C
Malta works brilliantly when you want sunshine but do not want to spend an entire holiday beside the pool. The island is compact, packed with history and easy to explore on a short break.
Base yourself in Valletta for beautiful streets, harbour views and excellent restaurants. Alternatively, stay around Sliema or St Julian’s for a wider choice of hotels and a livelier evening atmosphere.
My ideal October trip would include a day exploring Mdina, a boat trip around the coast and a ferry to Gozo. The sea is usually still warm enough for swimming, although boat trips can be affected by wind and rough conditions.
October also brings a greater chance of rain than the summer months. Showers can be heavy, but they often pass quickly, so pack a light waterproof and carry on with your plans.
Choose Malta if: You want a sunny city break with swimming, history and great food.
6. Rhodes, Greece
Typical October high: 25°C
Rhodes is one of the best Greek islands for late-season sunshine. It sits close to the Turkish coast and often remains warm well into October.
Rhodes Town is a wonderful base if you want more than beaches. The UNESCO-listed medieval old town is full of narrow lanes, little courtyards and historic buildings, while the newer part of town has beaches within walking distance.
For a more traditional holiday, look at Lindos, Pefkos or Faliraki. Lindos is exceptionally pretty, although its steep lanes and steps are worth bearing in mind if you are travelling with a pushchair or have limited mobility.
Some resort businesses begin winding down towards the end of October, so I would travel earlier in the month if you want the full selection of restaurants, excursions and beach facilities.
Choose Rhodes if: You want a Greek island holiday with reliable warmth and plenty to see.
7. Crete, Greece
Typical October high: 24°C
Crete is a fantastic October destination because it offers much more than a beach. It is Greece’s largest island, with lively cities, mountain villages, archaeological sites, brilliant food and enough scenery for a proper road trip.
The south and east of Crete are generally the safest choices for warmer, drier conditions. The north coast has the greatest choice of flights and accommodation, with Chania and Heraklion both making convenient starting points.
I love Chania for a short break. Its Venetian harbour is gorgeous in the evening, and you can combine old-town wandering with beach days and trips into the surrounding countryside.
October weather becomes less predictable as the month goes on. You may get a week of blue skies, but you should also be prepared for wind, cloud or rain. I would book a hotel with a heated pool if swimming is important to you.
Choose Crete if: You want food, culture and exploring alongside a few beach days.
8. Kos, Greece
Typical October high: 24°C
Kos is flatter and more compact than many Greek islands, which makes it especially easy to explore. It is known for sandy beaches, relaxed resorts and excellent cycling routes.
Kos Town is the best base if you like having plenty to do. You can cycle along the seafront, explore ancient ruins, browse the harbour and take a boat trip to nearby islands or across to Bodrum in Turkey.
For a quieter beach holiday, look at Tigaki, Marmari or Kefalos. The island feels noticeably calmer in October, but that can be exactly what makes it so appealing.
As with Rhodes and Crete, I would favour the first half of the month. Late October can still be lovely, but seasonal closures and unsettled days become more likely.
Choose Kos if: You want a relaxed Greek escape that is easy to explore by bike or car.
9. Costa del Sol, Spain
Typical October high: 24°C
The Costa del Sol is a great option when you want sunshine without a long flight. Málaga is served by frequent flights from across the UK, and the resorts along the coast are quick and easy to reach.
Málaga itself is one of my favourite choices for October because it combines a proper city break with a beach. You can visit the Alcazaba, browse the markets, eat tapas in the old town and still spend a warm afternoon beside the sea.
Nerja is prettier and more relaxed, while Marbella offers smart restaurants, beach clubs and a lovely old town. Families looking for a classic resort may prefer Benalmádena or Fuengirola.
October is normally warm rather than scorching. It is excellent for sightseeing, long lunches and coastal walks, but a hotel pool may feel cold unless it is heated.
Choose the Costa del Sol if: You want an easy, affordable break with city and beach options.
10. Sicily, Italy

Sicily in October is dreamy if your idea of a sunshine holiday involves long lunches, baroque towns and scenic drives rather than spending seven straight days on a sunlounger.
The south-east is particularly good for a road trip. You could combine Catania, Syracuse, Noto, Ragusa and Modica, with time for beaches and a visit to Mount Etna.
Palermo is a brilliant choice for an energetic city break filled with street food, markets and extraordinary architecture. Cefalù can be added for a seaside stay and is easy to reach by train.
The weather can vary across this large island, and rain becomes more likely in autumn. I would pack layers and plan a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities rather than relying on beach weather every day.
Choose Sicily if: Food and culture matter more to you than guaranteed pool weather.
11. Madeira, Portugal
Typical October high: 24°C
Madeira is warm throughout October, but I would not describe it as a conventional beach destination. This is the island to choose for levada walks, mountain views, natural swimming pools and outdoor adventures.
Funchal is the easiest base for a short holiday, with a wide selection of restaurants and good transport links. If sunshine is your priority, the south and west coasts around Ponta do Sol and Calheta are usually your best bet.
Madeira has lots of microclimates, so it can be cloudy in the mountains while the coast is sunny. Keep a waterproof and an extra layer in your day bag, particularly if you are hiking.
October sea temperatures can still be pleasant for swimming, and the natural pools around Porto Moniz and Seixal are spectacular. The official Madeira tourism board describes autumn as mild, with pleasant days for exploring and the first rains helping the island stay wonderfully green.
Choose Madeira if: You want an active sunshine holiday with spectacular landscapes.
12. The Algarve, Portugal
Typical October high: 23°C
The Algarve is not as hot or reliable as Cyprus and the Canaries, but it can be beautiful in October. Expect comfortable days for walking, exploring and eating outside, with the possibility of some very warm beach weather.
Lagos is my favourite base because it has a lovely old town, excellent restaurants and easy access to some of the region’s most dramatic beaches. The clifftop walk around Ponta da Piedade is gorgeous when the summer heat has eased.
Carvoeiro is another pretty option, while Albufeira has the largest choice of package holidays and nightlife. Tavira and the eastern Algarve feel quieter and more traditional.
The Atlantic is cooler than the Mediterranean, so even on a hot day the sea can feel bracing. Look for a hotel with a heated pool if you are travelling with children or know you will want to swim every day.
Choose the Algarve if: You want beaches, coastal walks and good-value autumn accommodation.
Which Canary Island is hottest in October?
Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria all tend to reach daytime temperatures of around 26°C in October, so the difference between them is usually small. Where you stay on the island can matter more than which island you choose.
Southern Tenerife and southern Gran Canaria are generally sunnier and drier than their greener northern coasts. Lanzarote is also reliably warm, although it can feel cooler when the wind picks up.
I would choose Tenerife for the widest variety of activities, Lanzarote for volcanic landscapes and stylish low-rise resorts, and Gran Canaria for the best mixture of beaches, nightlife and mountain scenery.
Is Greece still hot in October?
The southern Greek islands can still be warm in October, particularly Rhodes, Crete and Kos. Daytime highs are often around 24°C to 25°C early in the month, and the sea retains much of its summer warmth.
The trade-off is that the weather becomes increasingly changeable. Rain, wind and cooler evenings are possible, and tourist facilities in seasonal resorts begin closing for winter.
If Greece is your first choice, travel in early October and choose a larger island or town where restaurants and attractions do not depend entirely on the summer season.
Can you have a beach holiday in Europe in October?
Yes, particularly in Cyprus and the Canary Islands. These are the two options I would trust most for sunbathing, swimming and spending most of the week around the pool.
Malta, Rhodes, Crete and Kos can also deliver lovely beach weather, especially in early October, but conditions are less predictable. Madeira, Sicily, the Costa del Sol and the Algarve are better when you would be equally happy exploring on a cloudy day.
Remember that a daytime high of 24°C does not mean it will feel warm from breakfast until bedtime. October mornings and evenings can be cool, the sun sets earlier and unheated swimming pools lose their summer warmth.
What should I pack for Europe in October?
I would still pack for summer, but add a few useful layers. My October packing list would include:
- Swimwear and a beach cover-up
- T-shirts, shorts and light dresses
- Comfortable trainers or walking sandals
- A cardigan or light jumper for evenings
- A lightweight waterproof jacket
- Sunglasses, a hat and SPF
- One pair of lightweight trousers
- A small umbrella if rain is forecast
Do not let an autumn date fool you into skipping sun protection. The UV level can still be strong in southern Europe, even when the air feels cooler or there is a bit of cloud.
My top three October sunshine destinations
If I wanted the most reliable heat, I would choose Cyprus. It gives you one of the best chances of proper summer temperatures, warm sea swimming and a traditional beach holiday.
For the easiest all-round option, I would choose Tenerife. Flights and accommodation are plentiful, the south is reliably warm and there is enough to do if you get bored beside the pool.
For an active trip, I would choose Madeira. It may not be the hottest destination on this list, but the comfortable temperatures are perfect for hiking, sightseeing and swimming in natural pools.
Whichever destination you choose, I would book for early October if possible. You will usually have a better chance of warm, settled weather while still benefiting from fewer crowds and lower prices than you would find during the height of summer.
