Vila Rodrigues, Lisbon: A Stylish Apartment Hotel in Lisbon That Feels Like Home

Vila Rodrigues, Lisbon

Lisbon is one of those dreamy cities that has the perfect combination of colour, creativity and style. Something about the city feels cinematic, but with a gritty edge you can’t help but love. Lisbon isn’t perfectly polished like other cities, it’s softer but edgier. Even the hills (of which there are many!) feel romantic rather than exhausting.

When my Uber pulled up outside Vila Rodrigues on a quiet residential street (£9 for an Uber from the airport btw!) I already had that this is going to be good feeling. Not flashy-luxury good. Not over-the-top five-star drama. But the kind of good where you step inside and instantly imagine yourself living there.

And that’s exactly what happened.

If you’re searching for a stylish apartment in Lisbon rather than a traditional hotel, this might just be the sweet spot. Here’s my review of Vila Rodrigues, an apartment hotel in Lisbon where I stayed for 2 nights.

First impressions of Vila Rodrigues Apartment hotel: Calm, considered and effortlessly cool

Vila Rodrigues is situated on a quiet, residential street. The black entrance gates are unassuming, but I was excited as I entered the pin code I’d been emailed shortly before.

You head up the steps and you’re met by 11 villas painted white and a rich, dark red. Lots of plants and cactuses line the steps, suggesting a tropical garden in the summer months. Unfortunately I was visiting in an extremely wet February, but I got the vibe!

I was staying in Casa Sapeteiro, a standalone villa that sleeps two and has a small private patio. It’s a surprisingly spacious villa, something I didn’t expect in central Lisbon and has a fully equipped kitchen, a comfy living area and a gorgeous bedroom.

The design is what first strikes you. Vila Rodrigues isn’t just “nice.” It’s stylish and thoughtfully styled with the kind of interiors that made me quietly take mental notes for my own home! Neutral palettes layered with texture and clean lines softened by natural materials. There are subtle pops of colour and beautiful lighting which brings it all together.

It feels modern without being cold and minimal without being sparse. In other words, it feels like someone very stylish designed it!

And crucially, it feels calm, which is perfect for a weekend break to Lisbon.

After a day navigating Lisbon’s hills, trams and tiled façades, coming back to your own apartment in Lisbon feels like exhaling. The serenity in this place is something I can’t describe but it’s an absolute haven in a busy city.

Apartment hotel space: Space to breathe and live

One of the biggest selling points of Vila Rodrigues is that these aren’t traditional hotel rooms. They’re self-contained apartments which is what makes this place so special.

We live in houses at home. Houses with kitchens, living rooms, dining rooms and outdoor space. And then we go on holiday and confine ourselves to one small bedroom! It makes no sense to me.

If you’ve ever tried to tiptoe around a sleeping child in a standard hotel room, you’ll understand the value of separate living space!

But it’s not just if you’re travelling with children. It feels like such a luxury to have a full sized fridge where you can store a delicious bottle of wine and sip outside on your patio, using an actual wine glass and not some tiny glass from the bathroom!

Being able to make yourself a proper cup of coffee in your PJs then settle down on the sofa, and not wake your other half who is still sleeping, is another little luxury you get from an apartment hotel.

I loved having a full sized kitchen with a dishwasher and space to actually cook and enjoy the food!

Each apartment in Lisbon here feels intentionally designed for real life, not just overnight stays but for actually living.

My apartment had:

  • A fully equipped kitchen
  • A comfortable living area
  • A dining space
  • Beautifully designed bedroom
  • A gorgeous bathroom
  • And, my favourite, access to outdoor space

That outdoor space is a real luxury in Lisbon. Whether it’s a private terrace or a shared courtyard, having somewhere to sit with a morning coffee or evening glass of Portuguese wine changes the rhythm of your stay completely and stops the trip feeling rushed.

And if you’re travelling with children or a small group, Vila Rodrigues have apartments with multiple bedrooms to accommodate you all! No more tiptoeing around the baby!

Let’s talk properly about the design, because if that’s something you care about, you’ll appreciate Vila Rodrigues.

The aesthetic is contemporary Mediterranean, light wood, soft textiles, stone finishes, muted earth tones. It’s the kind of apartment in Lisbon that photographs beautifully, but more importantly, feels good to spend time in.

The kitchens are sleek and practical without feeling utilitarian. The bathrooms are modern and fresh, with high-quality fixtures and great lighting (because that’s so important!) The bedrooms feel cocooning and serene with proper blackout curtains and super comfortable mattresses and more great lighting. There’s also plenty of storage space which is a massive bonus.

It strikes that balance that’s surprisingly hard to get right:

  • Stylish enough to feel special
  • Practical enough to feel liveable

For couples, it feels romantic and grown-up.
For families, it feels functional without sacrificing beauty.

Location: Residential peace + easy access

Vila Rodrigues is set within a residential part of Lisbon, which I personally loved. You’re not stepping straight into tourist chaos the moment you open the door.

Instead, you get:

  • Local cafés
  • Real neighbourhood life
  • A more relaxed pace

But you’re still within easy reach of Lisbon’s highlights, from the historic streets of Alfama to the buzz of Bairro Alto and riverside strolls along the Tagus.

Because Lisbon is famously hilly (understatement of the year), having a comfortable base to return to really matters. After clocking up steps exploring miradouros and winding alleyways, being able to return to your apartment in Lisbon and properly unwind makes a huge difference.

Who is this apartment hotel in Lisbon perfect for?

If you’ve Googled this review, chances are you’re already wondering: Is this right for us?

Here’s my honest take.

Couples

If you want something more personal than a big hotel chain, somewhere stylish and intimate, this works beautifully. Having your own apartment in Lisbon adds a layer of privacy and comfort that’s hard to beat.

Young Families

The kitchenette and living space are game-changers. Breakfast in pyjamas? Easy. Simple dinners at home? Done. Space for kids to wind down? Absolutely.

Older Families

If you’re travelling with teens or grandparents, having separate areas provides breathing room. No one is climbing over suitcases or battling for bathroom space.

Longer Stays

If you’re in Lisbon for more than a weekend, choosing an apartment in Lisbon over a hotel room simply makes sense. You can settle in, unpack properly and enjoy the city at a slower pace.

The outdoor space: An unexpected highlight

OK, the weather wasn’t exactly a highlight during my trip to Lisbon, but this private patio is a special surprise. I can imagine having a morning coffee while listening to the birds or an evening glass of wine before heading out to dinner. It might not be a huge space but it’s big enough to give your stay a different vibe.

Vila Rodrigues, Lisbon
  • Morning coffee outside.
    Afternoon downtime in the shade.
A slow evening drink before dinner.
  • An after dinner drink soaking up the summer heat.

It adds something intangible, a sense of being at home rather than simply visiting.

Not every apartment in Lisbon offers this, which makes Vila Rodrigues stand out even more.

Practical details at Vila Rodrigues

Vila Rodrigues, Lisbon

Let’s talk practicalities, because aesthetics only get you so far.

Check-In and service

The service feels discreet but efficient with plenty of emails and a simple online checkin before you arrive. I was then emailed details on how to enter the property and then how to use the combination code for my door lock.

It’s not a traditional hotel with a busy lobby, which adds to the calm, residential feel.

I did have an issue opening my door one evening as my pin code wouldn’t work. But I’d been emailed a phone number so I called and sorted the problem immediately. The lady attempted to reset my door code, which didn’t work, so she gave me a code for the combination lock to get a physical key.

Kitchen facilities

It’s a fully equipped kitchen so you can prepare anything you’d normally cook at home. There’s a full sized fridge with a freezer compartment and a dishwasher too.

I appreciated that it was a full kitchen and not just a kitchenette. If you’re travelling with children or have dietary restrictions, this flexibility is invaluable when booking an apartment in Lisbon.

Cleanliness

Spotless. Everything feels fresh and well maintained, which, in apartment-style accommodation, isn’t always guaranteed.

Noise Levels

Because it’s in a residential setting rather than a nightlife-heavy zone, evenings are peaceful with barely a noise inside the gates of Vila Rodrigues.

How Vila Rodrigues compares to Hotels in Lisbon

Lisbon offers everything from grand historic hotels to boutique apartments like this one. Many are beautiful. Some are ultra-modern. Others are steeped in tradition.

Vila Rodrigues sits comfortably in that sweet spot between boutique hotel and design-led apartment in Lisbon.

You get:

  • More space
  • More independence
  • More flexibility

Without sacrificing:

  • Design

For travellers who like to feel immersed in a city rather than contained within a hotel bubble, this style of accommodation works incredibly well.
